Why where there sandbags holding the base of the beastie before it closed?
When where they put there?

I suspect the sandbags that you saw were the ones we used on Probe, Beastie, Bush Beast and Skyhawk for load testing. An addition to load testing was they added the required potential energy to the trains to help them get around the circuit which was especially helpful after a rebuild because your bearings are tight and packed with cold grease. It was not uncommon to have the sandbags in the carriages and a train load of keen maintenance employees riding the first trips after a rebuild then "bobsledding" then train through its slow moments to prvent a stall or even worse a prolonged stay in the bottom of a dip.
So those bags would have probably been around near to the spare train shed siding and piled up next to an upright but in no way they were helping hold it up.
