Australia’s Wonderland was built between 1984 and 1985 at Eastern Creek in Sydney’s west, on the junction of Wallgrove Road and the M4 Motorway. The 219-hectare site was constructed by Leighton Holdings on behalf of a consortium including the NSW State Superannuation Board, James Hardie Industries, Taft Broadcasting and Kings Entertainment Company. The park opened on 7 December 1985, when Premier Neville Wran cut the ribbon, becoming the largest themed amusement park in the southern hemisphere.
Three themed areas opened with the park: Goldrush (pioneer-era Australia), Medieval Faire (knights and dragons) and Hanna-Barbera Land (Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, Fred Flintstone and friends). Two of the three Lands have dedicated construction-photo pages here:
